How to Check Pulley Alignment by Using a Pulley Alignment Tool Laser

There is a driving force in the pulley alignment tool laser, which is used to check the alignment of a pulley. If any misalignment condition occurs in a pulley, the checking includes horizontal angularity, vertical angularity, and offset. The position of the transmitted line delivered through the laser on the reflector indicates the offset as well as vertical angularity, whereas the horizontal angularity is defined by the position of the reflected laser line on the transmitter.

Alignment procedures are always carried out in a place that is protected from direct sunlight as well as a shaded area to enable the users to easily view the laser line on the pulley unit. Now the question arises there on how to correct the pulley misalignment. There are three common misalignments which we have discussed above:

  • Vertical angularity
  • Horizontal angularity
  • Offset

Correction of three angular pulley misalignments:

  1. The vertical angularity misalignment is corrected by shimming the moveable machine. It uses precut 304 stainless steel shims for the correction of this type of angular misalignment, which can be observed on the reflector.
  2. Correction of the offset angular misalignment is by adjusting the moveable pulley or by adjusting the machine axially. This correction of the offset is also observed on the reflector unit.
  3. The horizontal angular misalignment is corrected by adjusting the machine laterally. This can be observed on the transmitter during adjustment.

Once these three steps are followed, it is necessary to complete the alignment of the belt drive quickly. And there are chances that one alignment condition may affect others, so it is recommended to repeat the above-mentioned procedures until the entire system is completely aligned. The indication of a good alignment is when the transmitter laser line and the corresponding reflected laser line matches with the line of reference on the reflector as well as the laser transmitter.

Importance of a good pulley alignment:

A pulley with good alignment boosts the reliability of the belt drive and also increases efficiency by minimizing premature wear or failure of belts, bearings, and pulleys. Pulleys can also be aligned by utilizing traditional string and straight-edge methods. But these methods of pulley alignment are very time consuming as well as are prone to error.

But pulley pro is an advanced laser system that is specifically designed and intended for the alignment of belt-driven tools and equipment. This advanced and proven reflected laser technology is designed to help the users to reduce the installation time of a drive, as well as reduces manpower and potential errors, which are directly linked with installation and pulley alignment.

Moreover, this system uses a return beam angle which is twice the angle of incidence. In this way, the reflected beam has to travel two times and dramatically improving accuracy. A good alignment is shown through great accuracy, boost production uptime, and labour savings. But it is necessary to keep the pulley aligned in order to get the desired results.

There are various causes of alignment failure, which one must understand before correcting the misalignment issue. So before you begin any pulley alignment using a laser, it is recommended to examine the causes of failures and corrected them to prevent a recurrence. These causes can be:

  • Poor drive maintenance can be due to a wrong belt tension or a pulley misalignment.
  • It might be due to environmental factors, which can be direct sunlight or harsh temperature fluctuations.
  • Improper installation can also be the reason for its failure, which is due to wrong belts or sheaves, or it can be due to belts forced onto grooves.
  • It may be due to operating factors. These operating factors can be overload or shock load.

So these are the common causes of failure that occur during the alignment of pulley and belts, so it is recommended to perform a visual inspection and fix the issues by using the pulley alignment tool laser.
